Because the uterus is inside the pelvis, the functions are not visible. The uterus sits behind the bladder and in front of the bowel, supporting them and keeping them in their natural place. When the uterus is removed, the bowel drifts down to take up the space where the uterus had been. Uterine contractions that occur during orgasm will not be experienced after the uterus is removed. During a hysterectomy the uterus is removed, and the hormone-responsive, sexual, and pelvic support functions are permanently lost.
